On Wednesday, August 26 at 7:30 pm PT, Scandinavian Dancer of Vancouver will hold a Zoom session. Anyone interested in peeking in or participating is very welcome. Just click on this link Virtual Scandinavian Dance and we’ll send the Zoom URL and all the information you need.
Given that we are unable to meet in person, we have been gathering via Zoom to get some exercise to beautiful traditional Scandinavian music, and some “different” music we have been throwing in just for fun. In each virtual session, we teach a dance that can be done without a partner. Then during the open dancing part of the evening, we play some couple dance music so people can dance inside their “bubble” or just listen.
The tentative plan (all in PT) for the evening is as follows:
- 7:30 – 8:00 pm Pacific time Join In and Social Time
– When you get on Zoom, you’ll be put in a “waiting room,” and from there you will be let into the dance.
– Other than during social time (7:30-8:00 and 8:50-9:10) please keep your audio muted to maximize sound quality - 8:00 – 8:20 pm Dance Teaching – MALMÖ MAZURKA
– Taught by Janet Gabites – “No Partner Needed” - 8:20 – 8:50 pm – Recorded Music
– You can dance along in your living room or just listen - 8:50 – 9:10 pm – “Coffee Break” and Announcements
- 9:10 – 9:40 pm – Recorded Music and Last Waltz
If you know of others that might be interested in joining our Zoom sessions, they can receive an invitation to the dance by going to the Scandinavian Dancers of Vancouver home page (http://www.vcn.bc.ca/scandi/) and clicking on the link to get an invitation.

Some other good things to know:
- Please change your screen name to your real name. To do this, hover over your Zoom rectangle. There are three dots “…” in the upper right hand corner. Hover over these three dots and choose “rename.” An example of an acceptable screen name is: Ross Schipper. Please do not use R. Schipper, Ross S. Or anything other than your real name.
- Please keep yourself muted. The invite is set to mute you at entry, but please check this. You do this on the control bar that should appear in the bottom of the Zoom window.
- Open your chat stream. You do this also from the menu at the bottom of your screen. This is how you may talk with others that you see on Zoom. To preserve bandwidth, it is best to use chat rather than audio.
- Ross Schipper will be your Zoom “host.” Please send him a message through chat if you need help.
- Garbled sound typically means a bad internet connection or insufficient bandwidth, and that cannot be corrected by Zoom. Restricting use by others in your house who are not watching the dance or turning off other applications that take up bandwidth may help.
