Hungarian Folk Singing Class every Monday on Zoom

From Zina Bozzay via the eefc list:

It’s lovely to see the various classes and other events being offered online during this pandemic. In mid-March I also took my weekly singing class in Budapest online, and we’ve been greatly enjoying it. People have been joining in from various countries, and I wanted to extend the invitation to the broader community.

The class covers a variety of traditional folk songs, using village source recordings, and includes pronunciation, translation of the song lyrics, stylistic details, background information, and more. This coming Monday I’ll be starting new songs, and new participants are welcome to join any week. Fortunately with the time difference it works well for many both in North America and Europe (6pm Budapest time is 9am in California and 12 noon in New York). We’ll be holding it every Monday this way for at least the next 6 weeks, through the end of May.

Open to all – no previous experience in the style required.

Virtual Dancing for Disabilities

Helen Winkler and her daughter Rita (who has Down syndrome) are regularly posting a series of Youtube and Facebook dances that they call Living Room Dances because they occur in their living room.  These dances all come from an adapted dance program that Helen teaches in Toronto for people who have intellectual disabilities.  Some are modified folk dances and others are dances that they have created within their dance community to suit their participants.  They intend to continue with their weekly postings until they have recorded all the dances that their group has done over the past 14 years:
https://sites.google.com/view/adapteddances/living-room-dances is the site where they archive everything.

Yiddish Song Workshop Sunday April 19

From Sara Ferholt on the eefc list serv:

From my dear friend Jeanie Lewicki, Yiddishist and singer of incomparable prowess and passion and humor:

Hi friends, so this is strange. I’m teaching an online workshop on Yiddish song this Sunday, April 19, 2pm Pacific time, for KlezCalifornia. It’s free! You can shelter in place with me & some great Yiddish folksingers of the past! This presentation will let you sing along while reading lyrics & simultaneous English translations. We’ll consider what makes a singer “sound Yiddish” (ornaments, timing, attitude); practice some easy techniques; & hear some funny beautiful inspirational songs (rated G, well, maybe PG-13). It’s a zoom workshop but you don’t need a zoom account to join. You do need to RSVP to KlezCal with a user name & an email address or phone number so they can send you a password & link to join in. Please RSVP in advance to gro.ainrofilaczelk@spohskrow.
For more info: klezcalifornia.org

P.S. KlezCalifornia has decided to make their upcoming series of workshops free for all. There will be a brief rap about the non-profit org at the beginning & end of the workshop. xox j

Riki Adivi Folk Dance Class Thursday 8pm EDT

Dear Folk Dance Friends,
I have started to host virtual dance sessions for my dance groups but now I’m ready to open it to anyone who would like to folk dance with us.
You are all invited to join a virtual international folk dance this Thursday at 7:50pm EDT (dancing starts at 8:00pm).
In this sessions I do not teach and we just dance as together as possible.
The program is based on dances that I taught in my classes in Richmond Hill and King City and we start with very easy dances.
To join the Zoom dance click:
https://us02web.zoom.us/j/7359404315?pwd=cjdaNFcwMmtWRXNlOVpNRGdjZVV4dz09
Or directly from Zoom:
Meeting ID: 735 940 4315
Password: dance
It is important that during the dances your sound will be muted. I will mute you all just before we dance, and please do not push the ‘unmute’ button unless there is something very wrong that you need to point out. Also, you should be aware that there might be a slight delay between the music and the video..
Looking forward to dance together
Riki

Zoom Dance Workshop with Joe Graziosi

This Saturday, April 11:
ONLINE
Greek Dance Workshops
featuring Joe Kaloyanides Graziosi

First workshop: 2-2:40pm EDT
Second workshop: 3-3:40pm EDT

Announcing the Joe Kaloyanides Graziosi online dance workshops this Saturday, April 11! Here is the link to the Zoom page for Saturday’s workshop.

The Workshops

There are two workshops, one beginning at 2:00pm and the second beginning at 3:00pm. This is, of course, Boston, Massachusetts time, so you’ll have to calculate what time it is where you are! We have had tremendous turnouts for the workshops by Ahmet Lüleci and Roberto Bagnoli over the last two weeks, and the benefits were both financial (to FAC), and emotional (our round-the-world-community joined in dance on our computer screens). How exciting it will be to be together again on Saturday!

The two workshops will feature different material, so if you can, you should plan on devoting the whole time to being together.

Making a donation

Joe, along with Ahmet, Roberto, and (on April 18) Zeljko Jergan, are all donating their time and talent to bringing us together in dance every Saturday in April. They are doing this as a fundraiser for the Folk Arts Center of New England, a […]
